Philosophically, I appreciate and applaud both individual and global elements of life, and have learned how to combine the best of each to create images that speak in an array of voices and tones.
I am inspired by Dorothea Lange and the photographic work she did during the Depression. Her works humanized the consequences of the Great Depression and influenced the development of documentary photography.
I fell in love with photography when I was a little girl. I watched my Dad with his twin lens camera and his 8mm movie camera documenting our family's lives. Today my family cherishes these wonderful visuals that tell a story of our special moments in time.
Before completing my formal art studies at Northern Arizona University and University of Kansas, I spent a semester traveling from Tokyo, to Calcutta, on to Capetown and more with World Campus Afloat. Thus, the first part of my artistic journey was learning to capture exotic places and people. After returning to Kansas City, I served in various positions at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art as well as teaching film and digital photography for Blue Valley Public Schools. I have enjoyed introducing numerous students to advance techniques, while photographing the elements of old Romanesque arches juxtaposed with street graffiti and Art Deco with Renaissance Revival. While I loved teaching the foundations of the dark room and classical photography, even before technology became a staple in our daily lives, I saw huge artistic possibilities in the evolution of new photography technologies in the digital age. I have presented at the National Art Education Conference on “Integrating Architecture Into the Art Curriculum” and continue to immerse myself in the art world. Combining my knowledge of traditional photography and digital possibilities, I have trained students to become highly successful young artists and business design professionals.
Moreover, in combining the best of classical and technological innovations, I have found my own artistic voice. I love studying people, all kinds of people, capturing their personalities, learning about their cultures, their homes and the essences of their lives.
Over the years, I have attended Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine, and been a student of 4 different Sante Fe Photographic Workshops. With each new experience, I have come to appreciate the individuality and oneness of our world.
I have been an artist for Young Audiences, worked as a public school teacher, and served as coordinator for Learning Through the Arts for the Nelson Museum. Formal training, combined with unique experiences and comprehensive knowledge of digital camera and photo processing technology technology enable me me to capture the best image possible.
In my practice, I capture the innocence and optimism of children and the energy and personality of family dynamics. I capture the magic that is pregnancy, the passion and expectation of engagement images. I seek to chronicle the essences of environments that tell a story—seeking the unique, true and best angles—using my close study to frame the experience.
